Sustainability

Swedish small hydropower

A part of the green energy transition

Our contribution to a sustainable society

TURAB’s operations contribute to a more sustainable society. Through our work to re-establish electricity production in decommissioned hydropower plants, efficiency improvements in existing plants and new construction, we are increasing the production of green electricity. In this way, we can contribute to reducing the consumption of fossil fuels and global warming.

Through our modernisation work, we can also help to reduce the discharge of lubricants into waterways because we have removed oil from our systems. In TURAB’s own operations, we constantly strive to minimise our environmental impact. When we develop and manufacture turbines, we choose materials that have the lowest possible impact throughout their life cycle.

Grease-free systems -TURAB's contribution to healthy water courses

For us at TURAB, it goes without saying that our turbines should not contribute to negative impacts on the watercourses where they are installed. Our grease-free systems minimise the risk of lubricant spillage into the water. We build the Kaplan runner mechanism in stainless steel and use self-lubricating bearings, making the runner hub oil-free. Instead of grease and oils, we use water to lubricate the turbine guide bearings. The bearings have been designed to form a thin, load-bearing water film for the shaft to “surf” on. A solution that we naturally use both in renovation and new production.

UN global environmental goals

Our contribution to a sustainable society

We have chosen to focus on the following UN Global Environment Goals:

6

Clean water and sanitation for all

  • TURAB's products are designed to minimise the discharge of lubricants into waterways.
  • Treatment of waste and wash water in our production.

7

Sustainable energy for all

  • Reducing global warming through renewable electricity generation from hydropower.
  • Encourage our customers to take action to reduce their environmental impact through efficient renewable electricity generation.

8

Good working environment

  • Our people are our most important asset.
  • We put safety first.
  • We work on preventive health and safety issues.
  • We promote good health in the workplace.
  • We promote personal development in the company.

9 and 12

Responsible sourcing and use of energy

  • Policy for purchasing process with environment and sustainability in focus. We prefer locally produced supply, when possible, to preserve Swedish production.
  • Reducing CO2 emissions in the supply chain.
  • Choosing renewable electricity for use in our facilities.
  • Economically sustainable returns to shareholders.

13 and 15

Sustainable consumption and production

  • Reduce energy costs within the company through energy saving measures.
  • Increase expertise in our company how to influence the reduction of environmental impacts.
  • Encourage and support our various stakeholders in reducing their environmental impact.

Documented quality and sustainability work

Accurate documentation is crucial not only here and now.

By being certified to ISO 9001, we ensure that the next generation also has the necessary knowledge about the design and management of hydropower facilities.
