Swedish small hydropower

A part of the green energy transition

Our contribution to a sustainable society

TURAB’s operations contribute to a more sustainable society. Through our work to re-establish electricity production in decommissioned hydropower plants, efficiency improvements in existing plants and new construction, we are increasing the production of green electricity. In this way, we can contribute to reducing the consumption of fossil fuels and global warming.

Through our modernisation work, we can also help to reduce the discharge of lubricants into waterways because we have removed oil from our systems. In TURAB’s own operations, we constantly strive to minimise our environmental impact. When we develop and manufacture turbines, we choose materials that have the lowest possible impact throughout their life cycle.

Grease free systems -TURAB's contribution to healthy water courses

For us at TURAB, it goes without saying that our turbines should not contribute to negative impacts on the watercourses where they are installed. Our grease-free systems minimise the risk of lubricant spillage into the water. We build the Kaplan runner mechanism in stainless steel and use self-lubricating bearings, making the runner hub oil-free. Instead of grease and oils, we use water to lubricate the turbine guide bearings. The bearings have been designed to form a thin, load-bearing water film for the shaft to “surf” on. A solution that we naturally use both in renovation and new production.

Our contribution to a sustainable society

We have chosen to focus on the following UN Global Environment Goals:

Documented quality and sustainability work

Accurate documentation is crucial not only here and now.

By being certified to ISO 9001, we ensure that the next generation also has the necessary knowledge about the design and management of hydropower facilities.
